Pluteus velutinornatus
Description
Pluteus velutinornatus is a species of Fungi in the division Basidiomycota, and was described by Greta Stevenson in 1962. Pluteus velutinornatus belongs to the genus Pluteus, and the family Pluteaceae. It has a velvety texture to the cap as it ages the velvet cells wear away leaving a netted pattern. This genus is always found on wood where specimens are usually growing singly. The gills are pinkish when young and the spore print is pink. The caps are dark and felty. Fifteen species have been described in NZ. Microscopic examination is required to distinguish some species.
Mushroom Identification
Cap
Light brown covered in tiny brown velvety hairs or scales which is denser in the center, this forms a rather sticking pattern on the cap surface, especially after rain. Convex in shape. 3-9cm in diameter.
Gills
Free from the stalk, tan colored but pinkish-brown at maturity.
Spore Print
Pinkish.
Stem
White in color with some minute brown scales. 3-9cm high and 4-12mm thick.
